Wedding between Art and Habanos
With more than five years since its creation, “SIKEREI Art Gallery” is a project for the design and manufacture of wooden humidors, based on the premise of the artistic imperative and the tradition of cabinetry, to offer a product that is revealed today as the continuity of the historical alliance between art and habanos.
This project is a reference to the aesthetic sensibility of contemporary Cuban art and since 2009 has grouped several artists who intervene on different types of humidores pouring into their poetic feeling.
The activity is more closely associated with a pictorial profile in working with the object. Here we find solutions ranging from expressionist tone figuration to raids in abstraction of informalism or pop art. In this sense, the freedom of chance is highlighted when compiling the composition, which is aimed at a vocation that gives each work a unique character, precisely the “picture of the traditional stand.”
Though the main argument is on haban, we can always find ingenious results where creators have put all their imagination; the works with textures, added elements, the landscaping of tobacco fields, the plains (vegas) or even the famous Casa del Habano Partagas, stand out as the most recurring motifs. Along with these motivations guaranteed by the work of well-known creators, we can enjoy the most casual experiences and experience other alternatives, as varied as the list of participating artists.
Currently, “SIKEREI Art Gallery” counts on more than 30 contemporary artists and a wide variety of drawers designed for pictorial decoration.
The first show was performed in the “XIII Habano Festival” in February 2011, under the name “Pure Art” in which humidores were presented with a drawing line that recalled tradition.
Since then, in every Habano Festival, as well as in other areas dedicated to Cuban cigar, the humidors of “SIKEREI Art Gallery” have been exposed, becoming a point of reference for both foreign and national participants, artistic level as commercial.
Art & Design
Another aspect of the Sikerei project is the creation of a humidor design line, where creativity and common sense are the two pillars that are defended. This humidor line shares Art Gallery’s artistic sensibility, and is expressed in two fundamental directions: one related to recycling and reinterpretation, and another where design is designed from the most creative point of view. This type of work is in close connection with a range of possibilities where the concepts of elegance and maneuvering coexist.
In summary, Sikerei’s work at the design level expresses the materialization of contemporary concepts, without forgetting that it is a homage to a product that boasts a whole cultural tradition.
